🔥 Real Talk: Burnout & Boundaries at Work 🔥

I have a win to share fam! Last week, I felt the early signs of burnout creeping in. Between planning and attending 10million Pride Month events, managing day-to-day operations, and just mama-ing in general, I realized I had gone WAY too many days without a break. Sound familiar?

So, I did something I used to never do: I took an impromptu mental health day OFF! 🙌 It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in a while. By setting a work boundary, I was able to recharge and come back stronger. It's not easy to hit pause, especially when you love what you do, and so many people are relying on you, but guess what? You can’t pour from an empty cup—not in your career, your relationships, or your passion(s).

At Spill The Tea Cafe, we try to walk the walk when it comes to boundaries. That’s why every full-time employee has the ability to take a mental health day monthly, no questions asked. We believe in actual wellness, not just talking about it. 🧘‍♀️

HOW TO SET AND MAINTAIN BOUNDARIES: EP 27

🧠 Setting Personal Boundaries: Family & Friends Edition 🧠

Boundaries aren’t just about work, though. They’re equally important in your personal life, especially when it comes to protecting your mental health! Let me share something close to my heart.

A few years back, I had to set a tough boundary with family and friends, and it was not easy. Many of them had strong opinions about my kid’s choices, telling him he was “sinning” or “going to hell.” 😔 As a parent, I tried to address it, but people kept doing it…I knew I had to stand up—not just for him, but for myself, too.

I was intentional and calm, but firmly set this boundary: I love you and am setting this boundary because I value you in my life. I hope and pray you can respect this boundary because I will be devastated not to have you in my life. AND, from here on out, you can only talk to my kid about school, theater, or other interests, but you cannot talk to him about hell or use religion to shame him or his identity. If you are unable to respect this boundary, we will no longer be attending “family dinners,” “friend gatherings,” or “vacations” with you.

It was hard, but it was a healthy boundary—saying yes to my kid and yes to myself, even if it meant saying no to certain people. And guess what? The people who truly mattered came around and respected my boundary. 💪

Boundaries are about protecting your peace and your most important relationships, even when it’s uncomfortable.

💡Why Boundaries Matter at STTC 💡

Here’s the deal: in the nonprofit sector, burnout is real. In fact, 40% of nonprofits fail within their first two years, and many more struggle by year four. But what makes Spill The Tea Café different is how much we prioritize mental wellness and rest to prevent burnout.

We believe that leaders should model what healthy boundaries look like—just like I did last week by taking a mental health day. Boundaries are not a sign of weakness; they’re a sign of strength and self-respect. When we take care of ourselves, we’re in a better position to take care of others, too. That’s the heart of STTC’s mission.
